School Custodian

New Hartford Public Schools is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of School Custodian for the 2026-2027 school year. This is a .6 FTE that is part time during the school year (4 hours per day) and full time (8 hours per day) during school breaks / summer. 

The School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and orderly environment for students, staff and visitors. This position involves performing routine cleaning and basic maintenance tasks in classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums and other school facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum and clean floors in classrooms, hallways and other areas.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms; replenish supplies such as soap, paper towels and toilet paper.
  • Empty trash and recycling bins and dispose of waste properly.
  • Dust furniture, windowsills, fixtures and surfaces regularly.
  • Maintain cleanliness of school entrances, windows and doors.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance (e.g., changing light bulbs, unclogging drains).
  • Set up and take down furniture and equipment for school events or activities.
  • Monitor and report maintenance issues such as leaks, broken equipment, or safety hazards.
  • Ensure doors and windows are secured and facilities are locked when not in use.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Assist in snow removal or seasonal tasks.
  • Respond promptly to emergency clean-up situations (e.g., spills, bodily fluids).
  • Collaborate with other custodial staff and school personnel to ensure a well-maintained facility.
  • Maintains a respectful, collaborative and positive approach in interactions with students and all district employees.
  • Performs all other duties as may be assigned by the principal or the Superintendent of Schools. 
  • Assists the principal and Plant Facility Subcommittee members in setting priorities for future maintenance projects. 
  • Assists the principal in overseeing maintenance projects being completed by outside contractors.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and tools (e.g., floor buffers, vacuums).
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safe handling procedures.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and dependability.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, stoop, stand and walk for extended periods.

Work Schedule:
This is a .6 FTE that is part time during the school year (4 hours per day) and full time (8 hours per day) during school breaks / summer. ; shift work may be required (e.g., early mornings, evenings, weekends).

Working Conditions:

This position involves working indoors and occasionally outdoors in varying weather conditions. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and bodily fluids may occur. Safety gear (gloves, goggles) is provided and must be used appropriately.

Terms of Employment:

  • Compensation: Hourly wage based on district pay scale and experience
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Custodial Employees Local 1303-336 of Council 4 AFSCME, AFLCIO, under the terms of the current collective bargaining agreement.
  • Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually by the School Administrator in accordance with district policies.
