      • Stay well, Stay Safe: Tick Facts

Ticks are found in grassy areas and bushes. Ticks do not jump, fly or fall out of trees. They wait at the end of a blade of grass or on a bush until someone brushes up against them.

Sometimes ticks can carry Lyme disease and pass it along to pets and people. Please check your children often especially after being outside playing and also teach them how to check themselves. Ticks can be very tiny so you have to look hard for them. Areas that ticks like are the head, groin and all skin folds. Examples are behind the knee and the elbow creases.

If a tick is found, instruct your child to have an adult pull it out. If done incorrectly parts of the tick could remain in the skin. Remove the tick with tweezers using firm gentle pressure. Be sure to grab the tick close to the embedded part. Clean the area with soap and water and document the date of the bite.Be sure to call and let your doctor know.

Protect yourself and your family from ticks. Stay on trails when hiking, wear long pants, long sleeved shirts and light colored clothes. Avoid sitting on the ground and avoid wet infested areas. Always tuck your pants into your socks. Use approved tick repellants.

Know the early symptoms of Lyme disease. They are skin rash or bulls eye, stiff neck or joints, fatigue, headaches, fever, muscle pain or swollen lymph nodes. ALWAYS DO A TICK CHECK when you get home.

        Stay well, from your nurses!
